06.27.09 Norbeck Kids' Excursion "Cowboy Hill Crawl"
Off we went searching for wildflowers.
As we climbed we began to notice wildflowers everywhere.
Surrounded by wildflowers we split into groups to sketch our favorite ones.
Guest Speaker Gerry Renner helps to identify.
Guest Speaker Mary Zimmerman answers question on how to identify this wildflower and how to highlight the basic shapes when sketching.
Can you see what wildflower they are drawing? Can you identify it?
Sometimes even when you're drawing out in nature it is still a good idea to have a photo for reference.
Wildflower and Identification Checklist
Just like in Nature, things are hidden everywhere if you stop and look closely.

05.16.09 Norbeck Kids' Excursion "Flume Trail"
Getting Started...
Guest Speakers Michael Salisbury & Bob Burns give us a brief history on the Flume Trail "Then and Now".
The beginning...
We hike where trestles once ran the flume across small valleys.
Rock Walls
We see signs where they built up the trail for the flume and the hiking path.
What's That?
Someone found a nail used in the original construction.
Should I Keep It?
WHOA! That means this nail is over 120 years old.
NEVER TAKE ARTIFACTS!
Michael reminds us that we should only observe and never take anything of historical meaning. Let the next person see it too.
The Tunnel
We hiked the tunnel and measured its length. 116' Long!

Cleghorn Springs Fish Hatchery Excursion 08.09.08
Tom Johnson a Conservation Technician with the SD Game, Fish and Parks gave an excellent tour of the new facility. We learned the Hatchery's history along with all of the new additions made in the renovation.
Guess what this birdhouse was built for.
We learned how the fish are raised from tiny eggs to the 8"-12" stockers they release through-out the Black Hills.
Norby was popping up through-out the tour.

Roughlock Falls Excursion 06.07.08
A break from the rain allowed for a beautiful day for an adventure.
Norby kept showing up through-out the excursion.
It took a keen eye to find him.
Guest speakers Bob Burns, Kristie Lovett and Jenifer Fowler informed and entertained us with information about the trail, how to identify birds, moss, lichen and a very unique bird to the area, the American Dipper.
